Fresno County Public Defender's Office

Defense Attorney I/II/III/IV — and Paid Post-Bar (Fall 2026)

The Fresno County Public Defender's Office is dedicated to the full and fair representation of all persons who cannot afford legal counsel and are in danger of losing a liberty interest. The office is actively hiring Defense Attorneys at all levels and is also accepting applications for paid post-bar positions for Fall 2026. Attorneys are assigned to a range of matters from misdemeanors through complex felonies, death penalty, and major crimes. Performance allowances are available for specialized unit assignments including Death Penalty ($400/pay period), Major Crimes — Homicide & Sexual Assault ($300/pay period), and Domestic Violence and Felony ($150/pay period). A Criminal Law Specialist certification through the California Bar earns an additional $274 per pay period.

Mowrer Fellowship in Public Defense Advocacy

The Mowrer Fellowship is a part-time, paid fellowship administered by CPDA and established through a generous charitable contribution from Glen Mowrer. The Fellow supports CPDA's Legislative and Amicus Committees through legislative research and analysis, organizing policy memoranda and amicus briefing materials, coordinating advocacy tracking, and posting content on CPDA's digital platforms. The Fellowship supports individuals pursuing careers in public defense, criminal legal reform, or related advocacy. Open to law students, community advocates, and others with an interest in public defense work. CPDA strongly encourages applications from individuals with lived experience in the criminal legal system.

Public Defender Investigator I/II

Plans and conducts investigations to support the legal defense of criminal and juvenile cases including homicides, assaults, drug charges, and other felony and misdemeanor matters. Responsibilities include locating and interviewing clients, witnesses, and law enforcement officials; gathering and preserving documentary evidence; writing investigative reports; serving subpoenas; conducting surveillance; and maintaining relationships with expert witnesses and outside agencies.
